Barbell Roll Out

This month’s article concentrates on a great core exercise for any athlete especially soccer players - Barbell Roll Out. It is an exercise that I came up with one day when I was training myself. I found this exercise really worked the core region and by adding a push up movement, it has a total body training approach to it. Watch the video below to see the movement. The start position of the movement is a push up with the hands in line with the shoulders. You then push the bar out in front of you about four to six inches while keeping the abs as tight as possible (this is very hard to do) then roll it back into the starting position. When you return to the start position perform a push up having your chest touch the bar then press up. When the pushup is complete you have performed your first repetition. When you try this movement you will feel it at the time of the exercise and definitely a day or two later. The other great thing about the movement is that all you need is any type of revolving barbell. I like to use with my clients as abdominal exercise by performing 3 sets of 10 to 15 repetitions or for the repetition method by making the athlete perform as many repetitions as they can with a 20 to 30 second period for 3 sets. Enjoy and good luck!
